Kia ora whānau!
We are organising the mega-multitasking fundraiser called “Elite Brownies!” This bake sale and afternoon tea event will be on April Fool’s Day 4.30-7.30pm, MCed by the fabulous Buckwheat, with appearances by Moana Women MPs including Carmel Sepuloni, Marama Davidson, Mariameno Kapa-Kingi and Barbara Edmonds and more… Some Moana women poets, including myself, will read poetry. No one will talk for more than 3 minutes! It’s all about connecting with each 💗
We will be selling $10 elite brownies baked by volunteers - expensive and irresistible. And $1 cups of tea. There will be an auction of art and signed books by Moana authors and artists.
It will be held at St Andrew’s Hall on the Terrace, (300 ppl capacity).
This is a fundraiser for multiple kaupapa - reducing harm caused by sexualised violence in our communities and the harm caused by racism - but particularly our hi-vis Moana women parliamentarians in opposition who are working so hard to fight against against all kinds of -isms everyday (racism, sexism, homophobia etc) and to give them political tautoko and high energy, some pūtea and a massive sugar rush! They have such a hard job and they are often attacked. 😭 As are so many women in the public domain, but especially those who are also targets of white supremacists. Death threats are not uncommon for our outspoken, brave warrior women. So let’s bake and eat some cake whānau and come together and laugh or cry, we don’t mind which… the world out there is 👀 but let’s do one little thing we can!
So… E L I T E B R O W N I E S
is raising money for:
1/3
to Moana Women in Opposition (3-way split between the Green Party, Te Paati Māori, Labour)
1/3
To four sexualised violence harm reduction services in Wellington. A 4-way split between a Pacific service (Alo Fa)
Kaupapa Māori (Te Korowai Aroha), Mainstream (Wellington Rape Crisis), and a sexualised violence primary prevention org (RE Aotearoa).

1/3
to women harmed by racism. These women will chosen by a panel of Mereana Pitman, Mele Wendt, Aroha Mead, Rhonda Paku and Karlo Mila. We will gift the short-list of women care packages e.g., “Do the mahi and get the treats!” We want to acknowledge how MUCH so many women targeted by racism do for our collective benefit! We want to mihi to you and celebrate you! Regarding our special gifts for these legends - we may upgrade to a ticketed awards evening on King’s birthday weekend (Monday) and celebrate the REAL Queens… (if we have the energy!!!)
Artists and authors are starting to donate works to auction off. We would welcome any kind of donation that we could auction off. It’s an awesome way of supporting the kaupapa!
People are volunteering to bake brownies, buy brownies, sell brownies, sign their books and send them and offer jewellery and art for auction. It’s pretty cool! Please let me know if you are willing to do any of these things!
Signed books from authors to be auctioned include books by: Whiti Hereaka, Karlo Mila, Nicole Titihuia, Nalani Hokowhitu, Simone Kaho, Shilo Kino, Libby Gray, Kiri Piahana-Wong, Selina Tusitala Marsh, Ani Mikaere, Puawai Cairns and more.
The stunning Teokotai Paitai is making a kete to raffle. I just know Edward Cowley aka Buckwheat will be an amazing auctioneer!
Even if you aren’t able to donate anything, or come, we’d welcome promo through your networks so that it is well-attended.
This is just a grassroots thing that we are calling “Putiputi Power”. No flash charities or anything. We are not in the pockets of billionaires. We are just sick of posting on social media and want to DO something constructive, cool and community building in real life. Laughing is not optional at this gig! Let’s eat brownies together, talk politics, mobilise, organise, buy books written by brainy brown women and eat more brownies!!!
If you are able to donate a signed book for auction, or artwork or craft work or anything, please private message me! I will message you the courier address or come and pick it up!
Thanks to Huia publishers and Anahera Press who are donating a special parcel of books to this kaupapa!!!
Thanks so much, Karlo and many, many, many friends x
