Join us for the next instalment of Dust & Groove, a monthly night of vinyl, storytelling, and live music hosted by the one and only Robbie Buck (ex-ABC).Our very special guest for March 4th is David McCormack.
David McCormack has been a constant presence in Australian music for over 30 years. Best known as the frontman of Custard, he was at the centre of the Australian alternative rock boom of the 1990s, with the band releasing multiple albums that blended sharp pop songwriting with off-kilter humour and reference-heavy lyrics.
Outside of Custard, McCormack has been relentlessly prolific. He’s released music under a long list of projects including David McCormack & The Polaroids, The Millionaires, Who’s Gerald, The Titanics, COW and more, while also building a parallel career composing for screen. His soundtrack work includes Rake, Redfern Now, Jack Irish and others, earning multiple APRA Screen Music Awards.
Most recently, he’s released A Complete History of Popular Music, the first Polaroids album in 20 years, recorded fast, instinctively, and built from a mix of newly written songs and long-dormant ideas stretching back decades. The reunion came out of revisiting old material with bandmates and quickly turned into a productive writing loop.
Alongside all this, McCormack is also the voice of Bandit Heeler on Bluey ! A role that’s introduced his work to an entirely new audience.
Expect a deep dive into songwriting, recording methods, old songs resurfacing, band history, soundtrack work, and the realities of making music across multiple decades followed by a stripped-back live performance.
