About this Event
Discover Pensacola's maritime heritage on a unique, evening walking tour of historic St. Michael's Cemetery! Led by local historians, archaeologists, and biologists, this one-hour event highlights the fascinating lives of those memorialized in the cemetery who were integral to the local seafood industry. As you explore this incredible outdoor museum, learn about the ecology of the Gulf of Mexico and its connection to the cemetery’s natural surroundings. This immersive experience blends history, culture, and environmental science to offer a deeper understanding of Northwest Florida heritage.
This event is a part of the "Northwest Florida Seafood Heritage Series," hosted by the University of West Florida (UWF) Archaeology Institute, the Florida Public Archaeology Network, UF/IFAS Escambia County Extension, Florida Sea Grant, the St. Michael's Cemetery Foundation, Inc., the Northwest Florida Maritime Landscape Alliance for Preservation, and the UWF College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities.
This tour will be held outside and will last approximately one hour. Attendees should wear close-toed shoes and appropriate clothing for the weather. Since the tour will be held at dusk, attendees are also welcome to bring small flashlights, if desired, to help assist with walking. Unfortunately, St. Michael's Cemetery does not have smooth walking paths for those with accessibility concerns.
St. Michael's Cemetery is also open to the public every day from 9:00am-5:00pm. The cemetery is also a Florida State Park and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
***Attendees should plan to meet with tour guides at the northern entrance to St. Michael's Cemetery on no later than 5:45pm. Free parking is also available along Florida Blanca Street. To support ongoing preservation efforts by the St. Michael's Cemetery Foundation, Inc., a suggested donation of $5 per attendee is encouraged.***
This tour is most appropriate for ages 12+; attendees under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Space is limited to 30 people. All attendees will be required to fill out a UWF General Liability Release prior to participating in the tour.
