Step inside the neo-gothic sandstone church near Wynyard station – St Philip’s on York Street – and be transported to another world. Three short Renaissance religious works by Flemish composer Orlando di Lasso are the perfect entrée for Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem. This work from 1947 is grounded in achingly beautiful chants to which he adds his modern French musical voice, steeped in mysticism and sensual harmonic lines played on the St Philip's organ by the brilliant David Drury. The intimacy and kaleidoscopic stained glass of St Philip’s on York Street make an utterly beautiful setting for this short Friday-night concert.
