Postcard from Italy explores the profound transformation of Italian cities, landscapes, technological advancements and society over the past century. Originally conceived as visual snapshots of Italy, these short films provided cinema audiences worldwide with glimpses of places that were largely inaccessible during the 1920s.In 2023, Duo Bottasso traveled across Italy to visit the locations portrayed in the films, capturing modern footage and sounds of these places today. Throughout their travels, they engaged with local communities, uncovered stories about the locations, and explored museums and sound archives, enriching their project with cultural insights, historical interviews, and field recordings. Combining sounds of nowadays with century-old movies creates an intense contrast, encouraging viewers to look at the past while listening to the present.
As traditional musicians working with archives and contemporary music, the two brothers raises important questions about the past and present: what is worth preserving from our cultural heritage? What should we collect and record for future archives of human expression?
The soundtrack for the movie was composed and recorded at Batavierhuis during 2024. The movie will be published on Eye Filmmuseum’s platform in 2025.
