There have been fortifications where Dunollie Castle stands since the Early Middle Ages, when it was the royal hub for the Cenél Loairn, a Gaelic kingdom in Dál Riata.
In the 13th centuary the MacDougalls of Lorn, descendants of the legendary Somerled, warrior King of the Hebrides isles and ruler of Argyll until his death in 1164, constructed the current castle and Dunollie became the symbolic heart and anscestral home of Clan MacDougall, symbolising their influence and resilience throughout the whole of Argyll. Clan MacDougall built 13 castles in the region including Dunstaffanage Castle, Duart Castle, and Coeffin Castle.
Lady Morag MacDougall of MacDougall, is the 31st Chief of the clan.
There are many stories of ghostly encounters at Dunollie, one of the most famous and frequent ones being of a Highland Piper who is often spotted in the grounds, or pipes are heard when no pipers are nearby.
Another tale recounts Alexander, son of Clan Chief Admiral John MacDougall, who fell in love with an Irish peasant girl, to his father's dismay. On their wedding day in 1867, as their carriage ascended the hill to the house, pulled by tenants and guests, one of the groomsmen perished, an event deemed an ill omen. 7 weeks later Alexander died. To this day, the sound of a carriage climbing the hill is often heard, yet no carriage is ever seen.
