About this Event

Among the large and small people groups inhabiting Central Asia, the Hui or Dungan occupy a special place. Dungans – Muslims Sunni direction of the Hanafi madhhab and moved to Semirechye (southeastern Kazakhstan and northeastern Kyrgyzstan) in the 1870s after the defeat of the anti-Qing uprising in China. Today Dungans live mostly in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Russia. This event will help familiarize the public and political community in the United States with Dungan culture, which has absorbed elements of Muslim, Central Asian, and Chinese cultures and yet preserves its own unique ethnic identity.

The Conference Speakers:


Abubakir Vointse - Chairman of the Kazakhstan Dungan Society, member of the Order of Kurmet, Member of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan, and Member of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan. Under his leadership, scientific works on Dungans have been financed and published, and several exhibitions of Kazakh Dungan writers and artists have been organized.


Ismaeva Rakhima – Doctoral candidate of philological sciences, Director of the “Hueizu Public Foundation” for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage, Editor-in-Chief of the online newspaper Hueizu bo, and author or coauthor of 57 scientific papers.


Saule Abisheva - Professor of Philology, Chair of the Department of Russian Language and Literature since 2006, author of 289 scientific and methodological works, works on the problem of systematic poetic texts, as well as 20th-century Russian and Kazakh poetry.


Rimma Massyrova - Professor of pedagogy, named “College Instructor of the Year” for 2007 by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and has written or contributed to more than 170 scientific articles.


Dina Sabirova
received her PhD in 2016 from Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University. Dina was awarded the jubilee medal commemorating 25 years of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan. She was the winner of the state scientific scholarship “For young scientists,” for 2017 and named Best University Teacher in all Kazakhstan in 2021.


Kazyna Bekbenbetova
is Director of the Department of Educational, Social Work, and Youth Policy at Kazakh National Pedagogical University, and has over 20 years of experience in education. She has contributed to 40 scientific articles and is the author of 4 curricular guidelines on social development and youth policies in use at Abai University.

Moderator, Marlene Laruelle


Ph.D., is Director of the Institute for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies; Director of the Central Asia Program; Director of the Illiberalism Studies Program; Co-Director of PONARS Eurasia; and Research Professor of International Affairs at The George Washington University. She works on political, social, and cultural changes in the post-Soviet space.
