What does Dunedin Pride do?
The main things Dunedin Pride does at the moment are to organise Pride Month (March) and to run 'Pride Nights' once a month. There is also a Youth Ball we organise annualy, and a few other things here and there. There's always room to grow and do new stuff for the queer community in Ōtepoti though.
How is Dunedin Pride run?
Dunedin Pride is run by the DP committee, which consists of a Chair (or co-chairs), a Treasurer, a Secretary, and a bunch of other general committee members with different interests and strengths (eg. social media stuff, event organising, community-building).
Currently Meihana Pōtiki-Grayling is the chair (but they would welcome a co-chair), Elliot Weir is the interim treasurer (and will stay on if there is no-one else to fill the role), and there is a vacancy for the secretary. There are currently five other committee members too.
We have meetings every few weeks for 1-2 hours, and committee members take on responsibilities for organising Pride Nights throughout the year wherever they can (we all have jobs and other responsibilities to juggle and understand the struggle). Things are a bit busier in February and March when we are organising Pride Month.
What is the Annual General Meeting about?
There will be the usual formalities for incorporated societies (Chairs report, Treasurer's report). We will also vote on reappointing committee members who are staying on, and on appointing new committee members (either to one of the vacant positions or as a general committee member). The other big thing we will decide at the AGM is if Dunedin Pride should work on transitioning from an incorporated society to a charitable trust over the next year or so.
How can I get more involved?
If you think you might be a good fit for co-chair, treasurer, secretary, or a general committee member then please reach out to [email protected] before the AGM to nominate yourself or find out more information.
If you are just wanting to get more involved generally, come along to the AGM to be a part of the conversation and meet the committee. You can also simply come along to a Pride Night, or reach out over email and make yourself known:) We will be working on a volunteer database in the future to streamline that a bit.
