When eight-year-old Cady’s parents are killed in a car crash, her guardianship falls to brilliant scientist but child-averse aunt Gemma (a flinty, wry Allison Williams). Rather than shoulder the emotional labour of a traumatized child, inventor Gemma outsources her care to M3GAN, her company’s latest invention that will revolutionize playtime, childcare – and murder. As the precocious doll develops sentience and an enormous chip on her shoulder, the accidents multiply – and so do the bodies! And…dance numbers! And singalongs!
From a whip-crack sharp and deeply demented script by James Wan and Akela Cooper (Saw, Malignant), M3GAN picks up the torch lit by murder-doll masterpieces like Child’s Play and Wan’s own Annabelle and gleefully lights the house on fire with it. Hitting all the trope highlights along with delirious reveries as M3GAN tries out her dance moves and popstar aspirations even as she cooly tortures her victims and emotionally manipulates her ”friends.” The film’s high camp sensibility means even its goriest set pieces find a way to plunge a little satire in with the steel – and who doesn’t love a sassy little diva delivering comeuppances?
