About this Event
Lunar New Year Dumpling Making & Eating Party
Kan's Dumpling Supply is back again this year and will be sharing their dumpling making secrets with you. Come celebrate the Year of the Snake! Learn how to make dumplings while enjoying asian snacks and tea, as we explore stories on Northern California's rich Chinese American history together. Once dumplings are made, we will all eat them together! All ages are welcome! Both Vegetarian/Vegan and Meat options will be available.
Thanks to the gracious support by volunteers and facilities supported by the Mendocino Art Center, the Temple of Kwan Tai is organizing this event to fundraise for their current conservation activities. The Temple of Kwan Tai is one of the oldest Taoist temples in California. Operating as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the Temple serves as an educational resource to enhance public understanding of Chinese American history in Northern California. The temple is a California Historic Landmark #927, and was originally built in 1854. In an effort to preserve the Temple of Kwan Tai, we are fundraising to restore the interior building's original paper artifacts. Previous restoration projects focused on the exterior of the historic building. It has now become eminent to concentrate on the interior and its physical artifacts. The funds will be used to prevent continued deterioration through several key projects: three extermination treatments to rid the structure of woodworms which have been eroding the wooden interiors, along with in-situ restoration for paper banners and duilian (對聯) calligraphy on the east & west walls of the interior.
Conservation of the first paper banner will be carried out by Erin Jue from the Los Angeles Art Conservation from September 17 - 19, 2025. Stay tuned on our events calendar for upcoming open workshop hours, for the chance to see her work!
