Event Details: James Buchanan Duke was one of the great industrialists of the 20th century. He, along with his brother, Benjamin Newton Duke, was also a profound and prolific philanthropist whose vision and legacy continues to enrich lives and strengthen communities in North Carolina and South Carolina nearly 100 years later.

Charles Lucas has a special perspective to share as the Chair of the Board of The Duke Endowment and the great, great grandson of Benjamin Newton Duke and the great, great, grandnephew of James Buchanan Duke. In the late 1970s, Charlotte’s political landscape was transformed with the change to single-member districts.

Hosted by Dr. Tom Hanchett, community historian

The Rosalie Reynolds Explore History Series presented by Wells Fargo is a partnership with the Duke Mansion and the North Carolina Chapter of The Institute of Classical Architecture and Art. In 2023, we lost Rosalie Wade Reynolds, the namesake of the Explore History Series. Rosalie believed in the importance of telling the Duke Mansion story and worked tirelessly to help us do that. Rosalie had deep local roots. Born in Charlotte, all four sets of Rosalie’s grandparents were also Charlotteans. We miss her energy, her kindness, and her joy.

The Duke Mansion is a nonprofit with proceeds being used to preserve and protect this community treasure. Supporters and guests of the Duke Mansion are dedicated to providing critical resources to help ensure that this home and all of the important history it represents remain a part of Charlotte for generations to come.
