Welcome to Dublin's Monto Guided Tour, followed by our Fundraising Art Lunch! Join us at the United Arts Club for a delightful afternoon filled with art, food, and fun. There are two types of tickets for this event, this one includes a guided walking tour and the lunch (tickets very limited), the other ticket type includes only the lunch. The guided walking tour will be held by Ger Duignan, meeting point is at the Custom House at 11am, followed by the lunch which will begin at the UAC from 1:30pm. Your ticket gives you free entry to the raffle where you can win a valuable piece of art to take home with you! We will also have an Art Auction at 3pm, where you can place bids on pieces that catch your eye. It is a fantastic opportunity to support the UAC and mingle with fellow art enthusiasts. Back in 1904, Mecklenburg Street (Railway Street) in Dublin’s north inner city, was a terrace of grand but fading Georgian houses, and it was here in the area known as ‘Monto’ that James Joyce set the “Nighttown” section (Cirque) of his novel ‘Ulysses’, describing a visit by Leopold Bloom on 16th June 1904 to a brothel run by an infamous ‘Madam’ known as Bella Cohen.
From the mid-1860s until the mid-1920s, ‘Monto' was reputed to have been Europe's most notorious 'red light' district, controlled by ‘Madams’ such as Bella Cohen, who exploited prostitutes with violence and money, keeping them in debt to pay for clothes and lodgings before dumping them as they lost their looks and passed their prime teen years. On this walk, discover how ‘Monto’ prospered at a time of great poverty in Dublin; its once famous inhabitants; its 'regular' visitors, the 'Locke Hospitals' and the part they played in the lives of those who inhabited 'Monto', its demise and how this 'red light' district situated in the shadow' of Dublin's Pro-Cathedral operated for so long……….
