Schubert - String Quartet in E major, D 353
Astor Piazzolla - Tango Ballet
Brahms - String Quartet in A minor, op 51 no 2
Schubert’s E major string quartet was composed when he was 16 years for his family quartet. It is thought to be the best of a set of six that he composed at this time. Sadly it wasn’t published until two years after his death at the age of 31.
The Argentine Tango is music, dance, style, culture and a way of life which developed in the portside bars and brothels of Buenos Aires at the end of the 19th century. Astor Piazzolla was born in Argentina in 1921. His Tango Ballet evokes the poignant essence of the tango ethos in a narrative of six scenes.
The second of Johannes Brahms two op 51 quartets were composed in Bavaria in 1873. Apparently he destroyed some 20 quartets before allowing this one to be published!
