Warm up this January with Haven Music Hall's January movie series featuring a curated list of dry, desert-y, dusty movies!! Free entry, discounts on domestic cans of beer and our cafe menu, and $2 popcorn! This is a VERY special screening of Dune because we will be showing it on laserdisc! Dress in your Arrakis best for the chance to win prizes! -Thursday Jan 30: Dune (1984) on LASERDISC!!-
In the year 10191, a spice called melange is the most valuable substance known in the universe, and its only source is the desert planet Arrakis. A royal decree awards Arrakis to Duke Leto Atreides and ousts his bitter enemies, the Harkonnens. However, when the Harkonnens violently seize back their fiefdom, it is up to Paul (Kyle MacLachlan), Leto's son, to lead the Fremen, the natives of Arrakis, in a battle for control of the planet and its spice. Based on Frank Herbert's epic novel.
-What the heck is laserdisc actually?!-
The LaserDisc is a home video format and the first commercial optical disc storage medium, initially licensed, sold and marketed as DISCOVISION! The format was capable of offering higher-quality video and audio than its consumer rivals (VHS and Betamax videotape) but LaserDisc never managed to gain widespread use in North America. This Dune laserdisc is being lent to us for the evening from a private collection!
Because of this film's longer run-time and the fact that you need to physically flip the laserdiscs, this screening will include two short intermissions where you can refill your drink and nerd out about niche video formats!
Doors 7:30pm/showtime 8pm
Jan 16: Tremors (1990)
Jan 23: The Mummy (1999)
Jan 30: Dune* (1984)
*Dune (1984) will be a special screening on laserdisc! This screening will include two intermissions.
