About this Event

Drumcell

https://soundcloud.com/drumcell

Drumcell was born as Moe Espinosa in Los Angeles’ San Gabriel Valley. Far away from the glamour and glitter of Hollywood, he cut his teeth growing up in a vibrant, culturally diverse neighborhood that still breeds inspiration for his work. San Gabriel Valley is also where he and the Raíz brothers, Vangelis and Vidal, met and founded Droid Behavior in the early 2000s which lead to the infamous Interface warehouse series and lauded techno label Droid Recordings.

A classically trained musician in his youth, Moe came to circulate around the Noise, Punk and Industrial scene, playing guitar and singing in various bands until he discovered the early ‘90s L.A. rave scene. That was when he got in touch with some of the heroic synthesizers of techno’s early years. His enthusiasm for those synthetic sounds lead to a career as a Product Specialist at Native Instruments and to independent musician and engineer work across Los Angeles.

By then, Moe was chuffed to pursue his own productions. When he handed out his first self-produced, self-pressed vinyls at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival in 2001, he heard them being played from the festival stages the very next day. Since then, he has released original productions or remixed tracks on DROID, CLR, Electric Deluxe, Torque, Silent Steps, Blank Code, Ibadan, Detroit Underground, and much more.

Drumcell explores and discovers the analogue world as much as the digital world of music production, to finally combine them into his very own raw, suspenseful and hypnotic style. Influenced by a myriad of music as well as science fiction and machines, he has developed an addiction to analog synthesis which has led to ceaseless experiments in his studio in search of new, mind-expanding sounds. As one of the most esoteric techno artists in North America, his sound disregards genre limitations and is everything but conventional techno.

This style has caught the attention of many of the world’s top techno jocks, with strong track support from the likes of Luke Slater, Speed J, and Chris Leibing. This style has also reached numerous prestigious international clubs and festivals. From Berlin ́s techno mecca Berghain to the main stage of The Movement in Detroit to North American nightclubs like Output and Stereo to festivals across Europe, Latin America, Japan and Australia - Drumcell’s sound can be heard around the world.

In 2015, Drumcell is ready for a whole new chapter of what he is best at and what matters most to him in life – the manifestation of truthful emotions in futuristic sonic concepts.

Max Gardner

For over a decade, Max Gardner has dedicated himself to techno. His DJ career began humbly, mixing records on tables with friends in high school. Fast forward and Max is a constant presence in Bay Area techno, playing clubs and warehouse parties, hosting his own events, and producing his own hammerhead machine music, performing all-hardware live sets.

In 2011, he co-founded Direct To Earth (DTE), a party and event series. Inspired to bring proper techno to the East Bay, DTE's first incarnation was a Sunday night weekly party in Oakland. There, Max came together with crew of friends and collaborators, and Direct To Earth began to blossom. Today, it's one of the most well-regarded techno affairs in the Bay Area. Through his work with DTE, Max has hosted, promoted, and DJed beside some of the world's most well-regarded techno talents — in grimed warehouses, hazy afterparties, and top-tier clubs.

Max Gardner's DJ sets run through the gamut of techno in its purest forms, inspired by the heavy, synth-forward sounds of Detroit and Berlin classics and new-school players from the Netherlands, Latin America, and the U.S. Midwest. He focuses on driving rhythms and intricate, long-form mixing — hypnotic blends that provide just the right amount of subtlety to whipped-up dancers. Max has played dozens of beloved clubs and festivals throughout the Americas and Europe: Beta and the Great American Techno Festival in Denver; MUTE in Medellín, Colombia; The Works in Detroit during Movement; Asylum in Honolulu, Hawaii; Desterro in Lisbon, Portugal; Public Works, Monarch, F8 in San Francisco; and many more.

Max has also been producing his own material for years, and in 2018, he released his first 12", an EP entitled "Broken Knives & Pinkies" on Bay Area imprint Excise. It features two original productions — one moody and spacious cut, one cut tightly wound and joyously alienating — and two remixes. Since then Max’s originals and remixes have landed on labels such as Dusk n Haze, Northern Parallels, Truncate, Occultists, Resource and more. Besides his solo productions, Max also collaborates with San Francisco hardware technician Marc Kelechava as Transpose, an all-hardware techno duo whose epic debut performance tore the roof off a MUTEK San Francisco afterparty. Later this year you can expect the launch of ‘peer’, a new techno label with Cory Simpson. He’s been busy for years, but Max is just getting started. Watch this space.
