MAKE A FRAME DRUM FROM DEER HIDE AND STEAM-BENT ASH
Frame drums go by many names and have roots in many traditions, including the Slavic culture of my tīpuna/ancestors. I run these workshops with the belief that these simple, ancient instruments can help us to live a calmer, more connected life by encountering our inner landscapes and other perspectives and sources of wisdom.
Programme: We will start on Saturday at 9 am with whakawhānaungatanga (establishing and strengthening relationships) followed by a ritual of gratitude to the animals and trees whose parts we will be using. We will spend most of Saturday creating the drums, either individually or in small groups. In the evening, we will welcome the new drums at a ceremony by the campfire. We will also explore the effects of musical vibrations on ourselves and our environment. On Sunday we will continue learning about our new taonga/treasures, and we will keep deepening our sensitivity to sound vibrations and frequencies, using a collection of a few hundred unique musical instruments as well as Kanikani-Porowhita/circle dances that bring wisdom from different world cultures, supported by very unique enviroment of Fareham whenua.
Facilitator: Ko Jonáš taku ingoa. I am a registered primary teacher and multi-instrumentalist with over 20 years of experience facilitating music-based workshops, international camps, and festivals for people of all ages. Since 2008, I have helped hundreds of drums to come into the world through workshops in my native Czech Republic, and I feel encouraged and honoured to share my experience and passion for this mahi in Aotearoa.
Cost: Early bird $396 per drum and one attendee ($440 after April 24th). If you bring along an additional person to work on the drum with you, we will ask you to pay an extra $160 per adult or $90 per child. $260 deposit upon registration - this deposit is non-refundable unless you can fill your place or it can be filled from the waiting list. Yummy vegetarian kai is provided from Saturday lunch to Sunday lunch. Please bring your own snacks if you need any. Accomodation available at the venue at
extra cost, please enquire the acomodation options with Maureen
