About this Event

With the Citizens Assembly on Drugs Use in Ireland now completed , this special Science Week event is a timely opportunity to learn more about the scientific and societal issues that drugs and drug use raise. This event is presented in association with Athlone Drugs Awareness Group and the event is part of the Midlands Science Festival. The festival is part of national Science Week, supported by Taighe Eireann/Research Ireland and there are a wide range of free events and activities taking place across Laois, Offaly, Longford and Westmeath as part of the festival.

Join us to discuss and debate these important issues as they relate to individuals, families, our communities and wider Irish society

Sean Kinsella is a Health And Wellness Coach with SK Life Balance and he is an expert by experience with regards to issues of drug use and his lived experience of addiction is profound . Since his recovery, he has undertaken work with the Irish Pr*son Service and a number of other organisations and shared his experience at a range of national and international events, bringing the voice of those with lived experience into the debate and discussions on drug use.

The event will be hosted by leading science communicator and toxicologist Dr Craig Slattery of UCD, on behalf of Midlands Science. He has appeared on national media exploring a range of scientific issues and presented his scientific and outreach work internationally.

This event is a unique opportunity to discuss and debate issues of drugs use with those who have both scientific expertise and lived experience of addiction and recovery.

Please note a ticket is for one person. Science Week events sometimes book up quickly and we have waiting lists so please if you can't attend for some reason, please do let us know. Midlands Science ran this event previously in 2023 in Offaly and it attracted a large attendance and those who attended said it was one of the most impactful events they had attended in many years on this important issue.
