The Soul Sunday series hosted by Debra James Tucker continues at Natalie’s Grandview with Drue Williams Jr, known as “The Voice Of the Bass”, a soulful solo bassist who plays the bass as the sound of a sweet mellow voice. His approach to playing solo melodies continues to capture the heart of listeners.Drue first began playing the bass guitar at the age of nine with his father’s gospel quartet group named the “Ohio Silvertones”. His bass playing has allowed him to perform on many local and professional stages, which includes the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in his home town Cleveland Ohio, BB King’s House of Blues in New York City as well as performances in Anaheim California and Nashville Tennessee and on many other stages. Drue has also produced and recorded with Grammy award winner Victor Wooten, Roy (Futureman) Wooten and Jeff Coffin on The Isaiah Williams Project debut CD.
Drue enjoys playing Funk, R&B, Smooth Jazz, Blues, and contemporary music and has never lost touch with his roots of gospel music. He still uses his gift of bass playing in church where he’s had the privilege of writing, recording, and producing gospel music.
The unique sound of vocalist Debra James Tucker is a product of extensive training in jazz, classical and gospel music. Her new album is “Voices”, which continues her exploration of early black church forms in contemporary contexts. She is the writer/performer of the one woman show Survival of the Boulevard Singer-winner of an Ohio Arts Council Award for Individual Excellence, has been a visiting instructor at Denison University in the history of African American Gospel Music, and an artist in residence with several youth arts organizations.
