“Leash your dog!” It’s a simple piece of advice, but even a quick peek down the collar aisle of any pet supply store shows that it’s not all that easy. Head halters, harnesses, prong collars, martingales… and that’s not even getting into material or construction. It can be hard to know what your dog should wear!In this hands-on lecture, we’ll explore the various training tools available, how they fit, how to choose the right one for your or your client’s dog, and (perhaps most importantly!) how and why they work. We’ll also cover potential issues with each tool and will discuss the best scenario in which each tool could or should be used.
Note: this presentation will include all training tools, including tools such as prong collars and electronic collars that the presenter no longer uses or recommends. This presentation is geared for pet professionals who will work with a variety of dogs from a variety of training backgrounds, and as such is intended to be educational and instructive for all common tools. Position statements from professional veterinary organizations will be available for those wishing to learn more about why certain tools are not recommended.
Instructor Bio: Sara’s been training dogs for over two decades, with work experience in the training, veterinary, grooming, shelter, rescue, dog sport, and daycare worlds. She currently lives with four delightful dogs, two sassy guinea pigs, too many plants and fish to mention, and a very patient spouse. A Byron native, Sara owns Paws Abilities Dog Training and currently spends her time between the two Paws Abilities facilities in Oronoco and Inver Grove Heights and her home in Burnsville. When she’s not reading, writing, talking, thinking about, or snuggling dogs, Sara winds down by building puzzles, staying up too late, and listening to audiobooks.
