Dreaming of LuluNew Kid in Town Productions/Christopher Ulutupu
Whakatū/Nelson
Dreaming of Lulu is a collaborative performance that explores new methods of storytelling. It was developed with support from the Fatu Fund, administered by the Nelson Fringe Festival and Creative New Zealand.
The work revolves around Lulu, a fictional character from the 1970s who listened to old love songs and smoked cigarettes in a beehive hairstyle. The performance creates a space for reflection and movement, as the performers delve into themes of heartbreak and loss.
Featuring local performers Maddie Stark-Schmidt, Manaia Ashley Ulutupu, and Rozlynne Kaisia-Tupuola, the piece weaves their rich personal stories into a larger tapestry depicting what it means to grow up in Aotearoa as Tagata Moana.
Dreaming of Lulu was first presented as part of an exhibition at Enjoy Contemporary Art Space in 2019. It is being revisited in 2025 for an exhibition at the Suter Art Gallery, where Producer and Director Chris Ulutupu will also be presenting his show 'Multiples'.
