The Dreamers’ Gala is a spectacular evening of food, stories, and music by Atlantic Canada’s brightest Indigenous performers. On December 12th, we will gather Alan Syliboy & the Thundermakers, Eastern Owl, Samaqani Cocahq featuring The Hello Crows, and Halifax Theatre For Young People to help us celebrate Indigenous-led initiatives in land-based learning and the efforts being made to heal the hemlocks at Asitu'lɨsk.
🌲 About Asitu'lɨsk:
In December 2021, we proudly acquired Asitu'lɨsk, formerly Windhorse Farm, nestled along Atuomkuk/Wentzell Lake and the Pijnuiskaq/LaHave River. This land now serves as a sanctuary for land-based learning, ceremonies, and Indigenous-centered work. Under the Ulnooweg Education Centre, Asitu'lɨsk helps individuals reconnect with nature, explore culture, revive ceremonies, celebrate language, and delve into the science of nature.
🌿 Celebrating Conservation Efforts:
In early 2023, we faced the urgent threat of the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) to one of the last Hemlock stands in Mi'kma'ki. Thanks to the tireless efforts of volunteers and partners, we've saved over 7,000 hemlocks, including many ancient trees. The Dreamers' Gala will honor these achievements and raise awareness for ongoing conservation efforts.
🎶 Entertainment Lineup:
Enjoy performances by renowned Indigenous artists from Mi’kma’ki and Wolastoqey Territory:
- Alan Syliboy and the Thundermakers: An award-winning group blending rock, jazz, and spoken word with rich cultural storytelling.
- Samaqani Cocahq featuring the Hello Crows: Combining visual arts and performance to explore Wolastoqey roots and cultural heritage.
- Eastern Owl: An all-nations women's group blending First Nations drum music with contemporary folk.
