About this Event
La Belle Jeté Cabaret was born out of necessity.
As a choreographer and trained dancer in the industry, Drea Kelly grew tired and frustrated with the skewed image of black female dancers. There is an unwritten rule that all black dancers must be strippers. As opposed to her counterparts of other races who are immediately recognized as professional dancers after stating their dance background.
Drea's goal is to cultivate a cabaret/burlesque dance company centered around women of color. This will inspire the appreciation of self, the appreciation of diversity, as well as the upliftment of all women, as they regain their sensuality and sexuality.
It is the mission of La Belle Jete Cabaret to pay tribute to the brazen Burlesque dancers of the past -- performers like Josephine Baker, Eartha Kitt, Lody the Body, Lawanda Page (best known as Aunt Ester on the groundbreaking sitcom "Sanford and Son"), and Lola Falana, crowned "The Queen of Las Vegas" in the 1970's. Four decades later, women of color and burlesque still lack representation.
Because of this, La Belle Jete Cabaret isn't just entertainment, but essential for changing the narrative surrounding the portrayal of black women's sexuality and sensuality. Through the beautiful and mesmerizing artform of burlesque dance, La Belle Jete Cabaret empowers women to wear confidence like skin and to view womanhood as strength. As the glamorous stages of the burlesque genre evolve, they will provide ample opportunities for cultivating a new generation of burlesque dancers whose unapologetic femininity will be revered and respected.
