Drawing Workshop: Memory and Interiors. The purpose of the workshop is to learn techniques and procedures to draw from memory. We will focus on the house we grew up in, in our country of origin. The stories can be our own or from other family members. We will practice some techniques that encourage preliminary drawing to confront the fear of imperfection. We will apply an easy imperfect technique with black ink or black markers on white paper.
OPEN TO ALL LEVELS, no experience needed.
Participants who complete their drawings have the option to also participate in the “My House is Your House” exhibition that will take place at the Urbana Early Childhood School in spring 2025.
About “My House is Your House”
The project entails the creation of a series of illustrations depicting the domestic lives of families who have relocated to Urbana, Illinois from abroad. Collaborating with families from diverse backgrounds and cultures, I will listen to their narratives and descriptions of the houses where they or their children were born and raised while residing overseas. Subsequently, I will craft the illustrations based on the personal information they provide.
This project aims to showcase the experiences of immigrant families in Urbana through illustrated drawings. We will create a free public exhibition at The Urban Early Childhood School in Spring 2025. This project will not only educate and enrich the community but also empower immigrant children, adults, families and artists by recognizing their contributions and challenges.
Suggested list of materials:
-loose sheets or sketchbook
-A soft B pen (Choose between 4B-8B)
-Pencil sharpener
-Eraser
At least one of this:
-One or more markers of any size like Pigma Sakura or Sharpie or alike.
-Ink and pen
-A simple pen or fountain pen
