About this Event
Drawing the Winter Creatures of Norse, Celtic, and Lakota Mythology
Artist and storyteller Carrie Finnigan will lead you in a three-session class through the world of winter creatures, the mythological beings who shape our Northern landscape. Carrie will show you examples of artwork depicting the entities, tell you their stories and discuss their cultural significance.
You then begin a series of exercises designed to increase your manual control and for eye-training. This will help you observe carefully, then translate what you see and what you imagine onto paper.
The entities are the following:
Skadi - the Norse goddess of bowhunting and skiing, she is responsible for the winter landscape. Her name means “the shadowy one,” and her tales are in the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda.
Cailleach – the Gaelic divine hag of winter who created the crags and mountains of Ireland, Scotland, and the Isle of Man. She controls the winter weather, especially the storms, and guards horned animals, such as deer and cattle.
Waziya – The Lakota North Wind, who brings the snow. The snow is a blessing because it makes hunting easier and it is a protective cover for Grandmother Earth. But it also brings cold, so Waziya’s brother, the South Wind, brings his warmth to balance him. The push and pull of the two brothers brings the seasons.
Bring paper, pencils, and an eraser.
This is a three-session class. You will meet on March 13, March 20, and March 27.
This class is held on Thursday evenings, when the Kaffebar offers BOGO glasses of wine and beer, as well as the full Kaffebar menu. Come early, have dinner, then take your glass of wine or beer into class with you for an exceptional evening of drawing and storytelling.
