Objective:Create a welcoming environment for students who are beginners to intermediate to learn the basics of drawing a portrait with plenty of one-on-one guidance.
Topics we will cover:
Proportions, shading, and linework. Simple geometric to detailed.
Students will be provided with all the necessary materials, paper, pencils, erasers and sharpeners. As well as photos of portraits that are straight on, profile and 3⁄4.
Day 1
1. Introduction: about the instructor
2. Overview of materials: what are they? How they’re made and best practices.
3. Explore the materials. Students will be giving a worksheet printed on the paper they will be using and will be guided through different textures and techniques.
4. Warm up!: find the basic shape of different faces. This will be a timed exercise, so no one is spending too much time on one photo. It’s about loosening up and finding those shapes quickly.
5. Demo: I will give a quick demo on my techniques in how to look at the face, find the appropriate lines that help find the proportions, and cover some basic techniques.
6. Deeper dive: we will spend 15 minutes on choosing one from each perspective of their choice.
Day 2
1. Jump back in!: Exercise in loosening up, and a quick demo as a refresher. We can cover how to draw eyes, lips and nose if requested.
2. Final drawing: taking what we’ve learned the day before let’s draw our final portrait. Students can use a photo that is provided or bring their own photo.
