Welcome to the annual convention for Northern Drawing School, held in Lund at several locations the 20th to 24th of August. This years convention is focused on the relationship between drawing and language.
How difficult it is, though,
to refrain from replacing the thing with its sign,
to keep the object alive before us
instead of killing it with a word.
/JW Goethe
Written language is in many ways a limited system of communication, where holistic and specific understandings of our experience more often than not make way for arguments around generalised terms.
Our modern language use is in many ways useful, being easy to combine and able to refer to many things at once, but they come with the cost of lacking precision and specificity and marginalising those major parts of our experience not describable with words.
Going back to Goethe, we can also see that he proposed that drawing and not written language should be at the base for our scientific enterprises. Looking at the development of language, one can clearly see that drawing and depicting symbol systems came before the alphabets we use today, and we see drawing as a way of reclaiming the lost specificity and holism of understanding that so easily gets lost in the games of language.
Looking at shamanism as an early practice of cultural transformation, we can see that the vision plays the central role in the work of the shaman. Drawing in a similar way work as the visionary base for scientific and philosophic inquiry, a pool from where one can fish out many different perspectives.
This is what we want to explore at the Northern Drawing School NDS convention 2025 in Lund, together as NDS and with various scientific institutions at Lund University.
We have divided the convention in to three trails: 1 Writing, 2 Semiotics, and 3 Literature. Over the four days we will be conducting different workshops relating to language and drawing. Central to all three trails are different methods of drawing.
Looking at how the difference between analogue and digital drawing can influence the way we draw and how these drawing can be understood.
