Leeton Shire Council in conjunction with WMS Engineering consultants have conducted a review of the Leeton Flood Study completed in 2015. Since the original Flood Study was adopted, Council has implemented a range of flood mitigation measures, and substantial advancements have been made in flood modelling techniques and data available.In July 2024, residents had the opportunity to contribute to the Flood Study Review by providing data on their experiences with flooding via a questionnaire and during two community information drop-in sessions held in Leeton. The data provided by the residents has also been used to inform the flood model calibration to the 2022 storm events, ensuring the model results accurately reflect the flood behaviour in the Shire.
The 2025 DRAFT Flood Study Review expands on the 2015 Flood Study, including using data from the 2022 flood event, and provides high resolution flood mapping for the towns/villages of Leeton, Yanco, Murrami, Whitton and Wamoon, in addition to regional overland flow mapping for the entire LGA and riverine flooding from the Murrumbidgee River.
This study will go on to become the basis of a Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan, in which options to reduce and mitigate flood risk in the Leeton Shire LGA will be investigated and recommended.
The 2025 DRAFT Leeton Shire Flood Study is now on exhibition. Residents have the opportunity to view the results of the updated flood modelling, read the report and make comment on Council’s ‘Have Your Say’ online engagement portal until 5pm on Wednesday, 22 October 2025.
Council will also be hosting a drop-in session on Thursday 9 October 2025 at 4.30pm at the Leeton Shire Council Chambers where you can chat to the project team directly.
