Each year, The Salvation Army of Montgomery County gathers our community together for a heartfelt Thanksgiving Celebration honoring the legacy of Dr. Wally and Neddie Jane Wilkinson. Their unwavering compassion and lifelong dedication to serving others continue to inspire this annual tradition of gratitude and giving.
Hosted at The Wayne Bergstrom Center of Hope, this event brings together volunteers, families, and friends from across the county to share a warm, home-cooked meal and the true spirit of Thanksgiving. Together, we serve hundreds of neighbors—ensuring that no one spends the holiday alone and that every guest experiences hope, dignity, and love around the table.
The celebration stands as a living tribute to the Wilkinsons’ legacy of faith, service, and generosity—reminding us all that gratitude grows when it’s shared.

Walter Wilkerson, M.D. and Neddie Jane Wilkerson moved to Conroe in 1958 and witnessed the tremendous growth of Montgomery County. Walter’s role as a busy family physician and Neddie’s
activity in the community allowed them to impact many lives. The increasing need for Christian-based assistance to less fortunate fellow citizens drew them to The Salvation Army. Dr. Wally, as he was
affectionately known, and Neddie Jane became devoted volunteers.
They were beloved members of the community because of dedication to many church, civic and philanthropic activities. Though involved in so many volunteer roles, The Salvation Army brought them the most reward. They revered its mission and how it improves lives. Wally served many years on the local Salvation Army Advisory Board. One of his greatest joys was transporting Christmas bell-ringers to and from their red kettle stations. Neddie loved supporting the Christmas doll tea and promoting the integral role the organization has in healing those in need. Members of the community remember them for their regular walks through Conroe where they collected litter and redeposited stray newspapers that fell short of a front door. Though they volunteered many hours, most important was how they interacted with people. They spread optimism, love and light that flowed from their belief in God’s redeeming grace and love manifested through Jesus Christ. Wally and Neddie Jane believed in and lived The Salvation Army’s values of respect,
integrity, compassion, relevance, cooperation, and celebration.
