DR. TROYWritten by Christopher Morahan
Presented by the ECB Theatre Ensemble
It’s the choice…. The same one we all face: are you happy to live a normal life, or do you want to be someone? Do you want to live your life in comfort or in meaning?
What is your life worth to you? What is your life worth?
Meet the immortal heroes of ancient Greece – Achilles, Ajax, Odysseus and the rest of their Greek comrades – but meet them here, today, in a modern world of tanks and disinformation, of high-tech weaponry and online troll farms. They are here to tell you the age-old story of the Trojan War and to tell it in a way that you will never have heard or seen before.
When Achilles quits the fight in what looks like disillusionment, a doctor specialising in military psychiatry is brought in to the Greek camp and tasked with unravelling the tangled web of his mind – the mind of a man who has been used by others as an instrument of war from a criminally young age. As the Doctor uncovers more about Achilles’ past, she finds that her efforts to help him escape from his past result in her becoming increasingly caught up in that same cruel and cynical world which Achilles is trying to leave behind. In the end, both are forced to reflect on what lengths they are willing to go to in order to confront an authoritarian state power which will stop at nothing to achieve its own unachievable goals.
In the universe of Dr Troy, the ancient seeps through into the modern and the old blends in seamlessly with the new. The play’s characters soldier along the parallel lines between our world and that of ancient Greece, paying tribute to the tragic story of the Trojan war and its related themes of conflict, violence and loss. With a testament to the enduring power of Greek myths, and the propensity for history to repeat itself, this play will remind us that, in the end, it doesn’t matter what your life is worth. Nothing is worth more than life itself.
