In this workshop, Dr Tom Sykes will explore style, structure, emplotment, drafting and editing in your memoir and place writing, and offer insider’s advice on pitching and publishing your work. Tom will get you to do some specially designed exercises to help you devise eloquent metaphors, interweave subjective experience and researched knowledge, and write an eye-catching proposal sure to grab the attention of editors, agents and publishers.
Dr Tom Sykes is Associate Professor of Creative Writing and Global Journalism, University of Portsmouth, UK. He is the author of four books, including The Realm of the Punisher, a work of reportage on the Philippines; Coast of Teeth, a travelogue of English seaside towns that was endorsed by Will Self and Arthur Smith; and a bestselling travel guide to Ivory Coast. His shorter writings have appeared in the Independent, Telegraph, New Statesman and numerous other outlets across the world, and he is a regular contributor to Private Eye, Britain’s biggest selling political magazine. Tom is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and holds a PhD in Creative Writing from Goldsmiths College, University of London.
