About this Event

Dear friends and colleagues,

We cordially invite you to attend our fourth and final event of the 2022-23 Music Education Colloquium Series, "Teacher Education Before and During (and After) COVID-19," presented by Dr. Danielle Sirek, University of Western Ontario.

About the talk

Health protocols due to COVID-19 have placed significant restrictions on teacher education in the arts in Ontario. Teaching and learning in the arts is primarily experiential, and material practices are essential to the process. The arts, therefore, have unique pedagogical principles that can be difficult to meet during enhanced public health protocols and alternative learning contexts. If the arts either temporarily disappear; are taught in theoretical, non-experiential ways; or become entirely digital; there is likely to be a lasting effect on teacher education in the arts and classroom arts education once the risks of the pandemic have passed. How will the work of teacher educators in the arts change, as they prepare preservice teachers to teach music, visual arts, drama, and dance?

About the speaker

Danielle Sirek is Assistant Professor of Arts Education at Western University. Her program of research is primarily focused on arts teacher education; sociology of music education; and intersections between music education and ethnomusicology. Her research is published in journals such as International Journal of Education & the Arts, International Journal for Music Education, and Action, Criticism, and Theory for Music Education; and has been presented at conferences internationally in a variety of disciplines. In addition to her scholarly work, Dr. Sirek sings professionally with the JUNO-nominated Canadian Chamber Choir; is Associate Artistic Director for the Windsor Choral Festival; and is heavily engaged in community arts.
