The Summer edition of the Drawn and Quarterly Junior Manga Bookclub invites young people between 9 and 12 years old to read the suggested mangas and meet up to discuss the books. Whether you've read the first book in the series or all of them, you're welcome to join us to discuss the world of these characters and share or learn more facts about every series. The club is hosted by Felix Mendritzki who is a 10 year old manga fan. He chose the books that he felt would spark the best conversations as well as introduce new books to seasoned manga lovers and newbies alike. It's a very relaxed setting that will be led by the kids and what they want to discuss. It's a great reason to pick up a book during the summer! This is a bilingual bookclub, with discussion happening in French or English, and kids are welcome to read either language version of the book.
WHEN: Tuesday August 13th, 5-6 pm
WHERE: Espace Drawn & Quarterly, 176 Rue Bernard O

The classics: In order for a manga to be considered a classic, it has to have impacted either the literary landscape or pop culture in some major, long-lasting way. Longevity is also a key factor. After all, a classic is supposed to be something that has stood the test of time and is still just as good today as it was when it was first published. This is the perfect place to start for an introduction to mangas.
Naruto is written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto. It tells the story of Naruto Uzumaki, a young ninja who seeks recognition from his peers and dreams of becoming the Hokage, the leader of his village. Naruto has 72 books in the series published between 1999 to 2014. Naruto is one of the best-selling manga series of all time, having 250 million copies in circulation worldwide in 47 countries and regions, with 153 million copies in Japan alone and remaining 97 million copies elsewhere. There is even a television series streaming on Netflix.
One Piece is written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. The story follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, where he explores the Grand Line in search of the mythical treasure known as the "One Piece" in order to become the next King of the Pirates. One Piece has received praise for its storytelling, world-building, art, characterization, and humor. It has received many awards and is ranked by critics, reviewers, and readers as one of the best manga of all time. There are 108 books in the series that began being published in 1999 and are still coming out. The series can be streamed on Netflix.
