The Garden Theatre, one of Houston’s newest theatre companies, has announced plans to bring the modern classic play, Doubt, A Parable, to life at MATCH. The Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning drama will run March 21-30, 2025 at Midtown Arts and Theater Center Houston (3400 Main St.) starring tour-de-force actor Nora Hahn (Ann), with the revered Jennifer Decker tapped to direct.
Set against the backdrop of a 1960s America in the midst of political and social change, Doubt is the story of when a progressive young priest’s conduct comes under question by Sister Aloysius Beauvier, the school principal whose beliefs are deeply rooted in tradition. As the actions and motivations of each are scrutinized and suspicion mounts, the two are drawn into a battle of wills that threatens irrevocable consequences for all involved.
Doubt is written by John Patrick Shanley, and premiered off-Broadway in 2004 starring Cherry Jones. After a successful run, the production transferred to Broadway in 2005. Doubt won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for drama, as well as the Tony Award for Best Play. The piece was adapted for film in 2008, starring Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, and Viola Davis. A Broadway revival was produced in 2024 starring Amy Ryan and Liev Schreiber.
The Garden Theatre is honored to welcome back audience favorites in the principal roles, including Nora Hahn (Ann, Bonnie & Clyde, Steel Magnolias) as Sister Aloysius, Emily Buesing (Steel Magnolias, A Midsummer Night's Dream, While Childhood Slept) as Sister James, and Ambi Anuh-Ndumu (The Color Purple, Reefer Madness, Bonnie & Clyde) as Mrs. Muller. Patrick Fretwell joins the cast as Father Flynn. Rounding out the cast are understudies Melissa J. Marek, Donald Hale, Jr., Jeana Magallón, and Danielle James. The production team consists of Jennifer Decker as director, Nicholas White as technical director/design, Michael Byrd as costume designer, and Ashley Galan as stage manager.
