About this Event
Join us for a free self-guided tour at Tempe’s most mysterious historic site. Tucked below two hills on desert land that was once far from town, this resting place is almost as old as the city itself. Walk among the gravestones to learn the stories of five Tempe women remembered as activists, educators, city leaders, and community builders. You will be surprised by the history you find right under your feet!
Tempe History Museum docents will be stationed at each clearly marked gravesite to start conversations and answer questions. The historic nature of Double Butte Cemetery may affect accessibility for some people with mobility considerations. Reaching the gravesites requires navigation of unpaved pathways, uneven surfaces, and areas of loose dirt or gravel.
Free admission, no registration necessary. We recommend arriving by 1 p.m. so you have plenty of time to visit each gravesite. Enter the cemetery from S. 48th St. and W. Westcourt Wy. and follow the signs to park and check in at the Memorial Garden. Parking is limited, carpools and rideshares encouraged. Visit tempe.gov/MuseumHistoricHouses and click on “Historic House and Historic Site Events” for more information.
