Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop.
This workshop is offered with U.S. DOT PHMSA HMIT grant support to the National Partnership for Environmental Technology Education (National PETE).
In accordance with 49 CFR § 172.704 (HMR), hazmat employees will be trained and tested and be able to navigate, define and explain the requirements to develop training lesson plans in the following topics associated with the HMR:
• General awareness/familiarization training providing familiarity with the requirements of the HMR and enabling the hazmat employee to recognize and identify hazardous materials, consistent with the hazard communication requirements of the HMR;
• Function-specific training concerning the requirements of the HMR specifically applicable to the functions performed by the hazmat employee;
• Safety training including measures to protect the employee from the hazards associated with the hazardous materials and/or hazardous waste to which he or she may be exposed in the workplace;
• Security awareness training providing an awareness of the security risks associated with the hazards;
• In depth security training relating to a company's security plan and its implementation, if applicable;
• Application of DOT regulations in order to effectively communicate the hazards associated with the materials being transported through marking, labeling, placarding, and shipping documentation.
• Interpretation of carrier requirements for hazardous materials according to the Title
49 CFR by railcar, aircraft, vessel, and motor vehicle.
• General awareness/familiarization of rail, air (IATA), and vessel (IMDG) transport regulations;
• General awareness/familiarization of driver regulations related to hazmat;
• Familiarization of EPA/RCRA regulation related to hazardous waste transportation;
• Reporting procedures to complete DOT's Incident Reporting Form.

Recommended 16 Hours of Online Training Prior to Workshop
To ensure a basic knowledge of DOT HazMat Regulations and be prepared for the workshop, participants are recommended to complete 16 hours of online coursework prior to the start of the workshop.
The DOT Pipeline Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (DOT-PHMSA) offers a free online course in hazardous materials transportation. Prior to attending the DOT HazMat Regulations Workshop.

- Begin by setting up an account. On the right-hand side of the page you will see a link for New Users. Click on Register Now and follow the directions to create a student login.
- Return to the original website and log in
- Complete each of the ten modules listed. The first module is simply an introduction on how the online program works. The program will keep track of each module completed. Note: Every time you see the page where you can SAVE your progress, do so.
- You can view your progress by selecting the tab for Completed Courses. From this screen you can view each certificate of completion and download a copy for your records.
Keep in mind this is a DOT-PHMSA program, so any technical issues you have will need to be answered by their technical assistance contact. We estimate this online prerequisite will require 16 hours depending on your previous experience with DOT regulations.
