Bradley University's Doris Kolb Women in Music Concert Series - Sarah Jarosz with Stone & Snow at Dingeldine Music Center
Come join us for a great evening of music in the lovely Dingeldine Music Center featuring Sarah Jarosz with special guest Stone & Snow. This concert is part of the Doris Kolb Women in Music Concert Series under the direction of the Bradley University School of Music Business.
The seventh full-length from four-time Grammy Award-winner Sarah Jarosz, Polaroid Lovers is an album-long meditation on those strangely ephemeral moments that indelibly shape our lives. "What I love about a Polaroid is that it's capturing something so fleeting, but at the same time it makes that moment last forever," says the Texas-born singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist. "It made sense as a title for a record where all the songs are snapshots of different love stories, and there's a feeling of time being expansive despite that impermanence." Thanks to the rarefied alchemy that infuses all of Jarosz's output — her finely wrought lyricism, ravishing vocal work, virtuosic yet unfettered musicality — Polaroid Lovers performs the much-needed magic of leading us toward a heightened sense of presence, all while casting a lovely spell with her timelessly powerful songs.
The follow-up to 2020's studio album World on the Ground (winner of the Grammy Award for Best Americana Album) and 2021's song cycle Blue Heron Suite, Polaroid Lovers embodies a bold new vitality that has much to do with a deliberate shift in Jarosz's writing process and sonic approach. "Historically I've been somewhat closed off to co-writing, but in the past couple of years I've felt curious to get out of my comfort zone," says the newly Nashville-based artist, who released her debut album at just 18-years-old. "For a long time it was important to me to write for myself, so that I wouldn't get lost in those rooms full of amazing writers. But now that I'm more confident in my musical identity, I know I can collaborate but still stay true to my own voice." In one of her first co-writing sessions for Polaroid Lovers, Jarosz joined forces with Daniel Tashian (a songwriter/musician/producer known for his multi-award-winning work on Kacey Musgraves' Golden Hour) and immediately felt an undeniable creative connection. "Daniel and I were both so excited by the idea of creating a new sound together, and he pushed me in ways I felt completely ready for and open to," she says. "It felt really good to allow myself that freedom, and to take that leap into something new."
Named “Best Folk/Soul Artist” at the 2022 Richmond International Film + Music Festival, Stone & Snow is an Americana pairing of songwriters and multi-instrumentalists, Karen Bridges and Clint Thomson. In 2012, they began a collaboration filled with close harmonies and thoughtful lyrics and gave it a name that gives a nod to the mountain landscapes of the West– Stone & Snow.
Delicate and Wild (2023) was recorded with Grammy-nominated producer David Mayfield. Delicate and Wild’s lead single “Moonrise” is a beautifully simple, yet haunting love song to the moon, while “Cruel” (named a top entry in the 2020 NPR Tiny Desk Contest) acts as a soulful response of “oh yes, I know” to the phrase “it’s not you, it’s me”. The album also includes the hopeful hook “we’re gonna be alright” on “Wait”, the last song they would write before the pandemic hit, as well as an honest look back on the years of a marriage that collapsed during that time with “The Hardest Part of Loving You.” Stone & Snow has self-produced and released five studio albums to-date: Delicate and Wild (2023), We Were Made For These Times (2021), Love is a Weapon (2019), Devil That I Know (2016), and These are the Hills (2014).
Karen and Clint are passionate about elevating women in music. Through hosting performances for women artists, their work collecting data on the gender balance in their local scene, and Karen’s involvement in the “Girls Rock!” franchise, Stone & Snow is invested in seeing more women grow and thrive in the music industry.
This concert is part of the Doris Kolb Women in Music Concert Series. Dr. Doris K. Kolb was a nationally-renowned chemical educator and affiliate professor emeritus of the Mund Lagowski Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. In addition to her many contributions and accolades in the field of chemical education, Dr. Kolb was an advocate of women's rights and an avid supporter of the arts.
Concerts are held at the Dingeldine Music Center on the campus of Bradley University. Dingeldine is a beautiful performance facility that was built as a church in the late 1800's. People compare its feel to the Ryman Auditorium. No food or drink is allowed in the recital hall.
