About this Event
Join us for an unforgettable evening celebrating the release of Don’t Go: Stories of Segregation and How to Disrupt It by Tonika Lewis Johnson and Dr. Maria Krysan.
This book reveals the honest reflections of Chicagoans who’ve heard, taken, or given the all-too-common advice, “Don’t go to Chicago’s South or West Sides.” These stories illuminate how such warnings are rooted in systemic racism and perpetuate disinvestment, segregation, and disparity in our city.
The evening will feature a thought-provoking conversation moderated by the dynamic Melissa DuPrey—actor, writer, and activist—at the iconic Silver Room in Hyde Park. Together, we’ll explore the personal stories behind the book, the structural realities they expose, and actionable ways to disrupt these harmful cycles.
This is more than a book release—it’s an invitation to confront harmful narratives, reimagine Chicago’s neighborhoods, and move closer to equity and healing.
Copies of Don’t Go will be available for purchase on-site
Seats are limited—reserve your spot now and we'll see you on Tuesday, December 17th from 6pm-8pm at the Silver Room in Hyde Park!
