About this Event

For two weeks in January, visitors to Anzac Square Memorial Galleries can see the colourful venetian glass mosaic created by late Brisbane artist, Don Ross.

This powerful tribute to the men and women who served in World War II is only revealed once per year (to coincide with the artist's birthday) and features an astounding 140,000 hand cut Venetian glass enamel tiles mixed with soil from the graves of fallen soldiers.

The relocation of the mosaic in 1984 from its original location in the RSL headquarters on Wickham Terrace was a painstaking process in which the glass enamels were removed piece by piece and reassembled with Venetian mosaicist Renato Gregorini flown in from Italy for the task.
