About this Event

Join Dr. Adam Smyth, Professor of English Literature at Balliol College, Oxford, for a discussion of his recent work, Book-makers: A History of the Book in 18 Lives (2024). This exciting new study puts people back into the story of the book—from inside the print-shop as the deadline looms and the adrenaline flows, to Fleet Street of 1492, and to present-day New York. Book sales, signing, and a reception will follow.

Adam Smyth is Professor of English Literature and the History of the Book at Balliol College, Oxford University. He is the author of The Book-Makers: A History of the Book in 18 Lives (2024), in addition to several books on literary and bibliographical culture. He writes regularly for the London Review of Books.
