If God doesn’t exist, how do everything get here? If God does exist, why is there so much suffering in the world? When you look at all the evidence, does it seem more likely that God exists or that God doesn’t exist?
On Thursday, March 13th, from 11:30 – 1:00, Saint Elizabeth University will host a debate between David Coppola and Ryan McLaughlin.
The simple prompt for the debate is, “Does God exist?”
The more complex version of the prompt is this:
Does a God exist who meets the following criteria?
Creator (God is the author of our world's design and order)
Personal (God has qualities, including love, compassion, and reciprocity, that enable God to have personal relationships)
Providential (God can interact with the world to bring about desired ends, such as miracles like the resurrection of Jesus)
Sufficiently Powerful (God has sufficient power to create the world and providentially care for it)
Sufficiently Knowledgeable (God has sufficient knowledge to create the world and providentially care for it)
Universally Loving (God loves the entire created order, including its individual creatures, expressing a consistent commitment to their well-being)
Ryan McLaughlin will be arguing that such a God does not exist. David Coppola will be arguing that such a God does exist.
The format will include opening arguments by both debaters, cross-examinations, rebuttals, and closing arguments. There will also be an extended period of Q&A from the audience, so you’ll have an opportunity to ask questions to both debaters.
The debate will be co-moderated by Carla Ferreira and Steven Hertler.
Please contact Ryan McLaughlin if you have any questions.
This debate is sponsored by the Department of Religious Studies, Philosophy, and Theology. It is co-sponsored by the Honors Program
