Karnataka Climbers and Explorers is launching a high-altitude trekking, camping and training programme to Dodital is a lake situated at an altitude of 3024 Mts in the Aassi Ganga valley of Uttarakhand. The place is popularly referred to as ‘Ganesha Katal’ by the locals as they believe that Lord Ganesha was born here.
On the right side of this enchanting lake is a small Ganesha temple adding to the belief of the locals. It is a freshwater lake that serves as the primary source for the Aassi Ganga river that merges downstream with Bhagirathi. Being a fresh water lake, trout fish is farmed here. The approximately 40 km trek to the crystal green Dodital Lake starts from Agoda village. The trail leading to the lake is peppered with astounding and cute mountain villages – Agoda, Bebra and Maanji to name a few, thick vegetation, lush green surroundings and bubbly streams.
As one proceeds to higher reaches, you will find yourself in the
midst of enchanting pine, deodar and silver oak trees - all
the way up till Dodital. Set at an elevation of 4150 mts, Darwa Top, also known as Darwa Pass is a gorge that connects the Ganga and Yamuna river valleys. Darwa Top lies 5 kms ahead of Dodital and it is the highest point of the trek. The climb to the pass from Dodital is the crux of this trek. From the pass, one can get excellent view of mesmerising mountain peaks like Swargarohini, Banderpunch, Draupadi ka Danda, Srikantha, Jaonli, and Deonli. The pass is a gateway to Yamunotri via Hanuman Chatti. Even the popular winter destination of Dayara Bugyal can be reached via Darwa pass.
In short, this trek is a rewarding experience for both the beginner as well as the seasoned hiker as walking amidst dense forest, treading on narrow mountain trails alongside deep river gorges, crossing streams, wilderness camping, negotiating steep climb and finally treading on knee-deep snow (in winter) - all of these experiences staying within manageable altitude is not only welcome but quite rare too.
