Ulrich Seidl’s In the Basement turns the camera toward a space rarely seen: the basements of ordinary Austrians. With his signature static compositions and quiet precision, Seidl observes how men and women spend their private hours below the surface of domestic life. Some basements are filled with hobbies, rituals, or collections; others reveal unexpected passions and pastimes. Without commentary or judgment, the film captures the strange harmony between normality and absurdity, between everyday respectability and what unfolds out of sight.
