Do Less: The Power of Stillness and Repetition in Choreography Maybe you’ve felt it in your choreography–when aerial nerdery and an itch to impress hijacks your emotional intent and turns out a stream of trick-trick-trick. While it can be fun to flex for an audience, sometimes we want to leave them with a little more–a faint wist, a fluttering joy, a jittered nerve. Stillness and repetition are two awesome, if oft-forgotten, tools to this end! We’ll spend this workshop dusting off and honing those tools. Come learn to concentrate an emotional moment with a well-timed lack of movement, how to build motifs by doing the same thing on repeat, and how to find the confidence in yourself to do less.
Pre-Reqs: 6-months on your apparatus minimum, must be able to invert from the air, and must be interested in making choreography (since this workshop aims to hone those skills)
Three learning goals:
* Students will have an understanding of how the human eye absorbs (and doesn’t absorb) motion
* Students will understand different approaches to repetition
* Students will build the confidence to apply stillness and repetition to their work
Workshop is $40
Sable's bio:
From the age of three, Sable has been a lover of movement. Her early forays into Irish dance and tangley swingset choreography inspired her to pursue a dual education in Cecchetti ballet and release technique modern dance at Northwest School of the Arts. When a twisted ankle paused Sable’s dance career in 2016, her insatiable desire to move led her to the fantastical world of aerial. Already a fan of upside-down-ness and heights, she has an endless hunger for silks, sling, and rope, but her most particular passion lies in spinning and slithering on a lyra. Gifted with a mercurial presence, Sable can fill a room with bone-deep dolor, glitteringest charm, or visceral malevolence with the turn of a wrist. Her work is omnivorous in its interests, most often drawing from deep oceans of personal memory, invented mythologies, and an obsession with movement theory. Her work speaks to those who appreciate the duality of beauty and violence that colors human existence. From her home base in Charlotte, Sable has created and shown work in all kinds of spaces and conditions. She has summoned tender ghosts as an artist-in-residence in a hollowed-out Goodyear Tire building. She has gone darkly limbed on LadyfestCLT’s stage in the maze of an old pharmaceuticals factory. She has shone brightly as the evening’s entertainment in the graceful atriums of the Blumenthal Theater. When she isn’t twirling in the air or twisting herself on the ground, Sable reads tarot, poses for photos and drawings, and sews feathers onto everything she possibly can.
