African Drumshack Entertainment presents,
“The Drumshack Experience!”
Facilitated Workshop: DJEMBE Drumming!

We are super excited to present our Djembe Drumming Workshops!

African Drumshack Djembe Workshop
Join Jonathan from African Drumshack for a fun and energetic interactive drumming workshop where you'll learn about African drum and culture. These sessions primarily involve playing the African drum (Djembe) - a large goblet shaped drum originating from West Africa and played with bare hands.
No experience is needed to take part, so come along to meet new people and develop a new skill or break out of a stagnant phase in your Djembe drumming journey!
Drumming workshops aim to improve wellbeing and the benefits of playing the drums are endless, and can help with anxiety, depression, and social resilience. We believe best part of the class is getting together with others and enjoying each other's company.
Playing music transcends age, gender, and culture, and in a few moments, you're all speaking the same language through rhythm and drumming
This dynamic workshop is an introduction to the energetic style of West African djembe drumming. The djembe drum originates from West Africa, in particular Senegal, The Gambia, Mali, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Ghana & Burkina Faso. It has become West Africa’s most popular drum due to its sonorous tonal qualities, pulsating sound and the relative simplicity of its playing technique.
In this workshop, every participant will learn a traditional West African piece of music that is an excellent practical introduction to Djembe drumming. The piece is learnt aurally, as practiced in West Africa, and creates opportunities for participants to improvise solos, respond to aural cues and develop their ensemble playing.
This workshop is suitable for enthusiasts from 16 years of age and up.

Learning Outcomes
Participants will:
• Learn a traditional West African piece of music using djembes
• Enhance rhythmic and improvisational skills
• Develop listening skills
• Develop ability to work in an ensemble
• Develop confidence through performing
This mixed-ability drop-in class is good for beginners and intermediate players – each monthly workshop will build upon the rhythm being taught as additional patterns for cross rhythm performance are added. We teach basic accompaniments, bass lines, arranged breaks and solo material, working as a group towards an overall understanding of the music.
You’ll learn a multi-layered African rhythm and feel the way the parts groove with each other under the direction of experienced teacher and facilitator, Jonathan Pimenta from African drumshack Entertainment.
Build confidence, technique and drumming etiquette.
Participants can stay on for the evening open jam session for free expression session.
Take a 1/2 day weekend workshop & be surprised by what you learn in a small amount of time.
Get your hands on the beautiful djembe drums and learn the intricacies of playing cultural rhythms in this musical workshop. Participants not only get to learn the techniques but also experience the joy of creating music with their own hands.
African Drumshack also is a purveyor of fine percussion instruments: hand crafted solid wood Djembe drums – you may wish to secure your own Djembe drum for home practice and self-improvement.
No previous experience is required, be prepared to be immersed in an extraordinary drumming experience that has the potential to unlock hidden talent that may very well astonish you!
