Rachelle Eastwood Quartet
Brisbane based flutist Rachelle Eastwood launches the DJC “Pop-Up” series at Moons in 2025, performing her original compositions and standards with a quartet including Simon Eastwood (double bass), Bill Martin (piano) and Carl Woodward (drums). Eastwood has studied jazz in a range of musical contexts, which influence her arrangements and her improvisational style, including elements of funk, hip-hop, neo-soul and traditional Afro-Cuban rhythms.
Rachelle began her flute career in the classical world, performing with local orchestras and the NZAF band. Her eclectic tastes eventually led her into the jazz world, where she can often be heard playing flute funk or performing with the beloved anarchistic jazz group The Troubles. Rachelle lived in Montreal for two years, further expanding her skills on the jazz flute. She has also spent time in Cuba, studying with the great Orlando 'Maraca' Valle, and in New York. While in Canada, Rachelle performed with well-known jazz flutists Bill McBirnie and Billy Kerr, among other local jazz, Brazilian, Cuban, hip hop, and neo-soul musicians.
For the first time, Rachelle brings her original compositions to Dunedin, joined by her brother Simon Eastwood on bass (Mozart Fellow). This performance will mark the first time in many years they have played together, making it a familial affair, as many of Rachelle’s compositions are dedicated to their grandparents. Her work often explores themes of loss and belonging, drawing on her diverse musical background.
