DJC End of Year Party with Rule 5 and Sur QuartetJoin us at Errick’s Venue on the afternoon of Sunday December 14 to celebrate the end of a busy year for the Dunedin Jazz Club! To close out the year, local bands - Rule 5 and Sur Quartet - will entertain you with two sets of swing classics and Latin jazz, which you can enjoy at the relaxed setting of Errick’s venue. The bar will be open and the food truck in full swing to ensure that patrons can mingle, dance and enjoy some innovative and nostalgic music. There will also be plenty of time in between sets to chat to your friends with DJ Raoul Hobbs spinning some classic jazz records to get you moving.
Rule 5 is led by American trumpeter Mike Gaches, who brings an eclectic mix of musicians from Dunedin to perform a range of swing classics and jazz standards. Alongside tenor saxophonist Elliot Tay and trombonist Peter Claman from the Dunedin City Jazz Orchestra, Mike will be blowing up a storm with his signature big sound on the trumpet. Rhythm players Jesse Kokaua on guitar, Andy Lynch on bass and Amelia Ross on the drums will provide a swinging foundation to ensure that you can enjoy tunes such as “Sing Sing Sing”, “Basin Street Blues”, “Blue Skies”, “All of Me” and “All the Things You Are”.
Opening up at the event will be local Latin American jazz ensemble “Sur Quartet”. Featuring Chilean singer Kena Rojas, this group will present an eclectic mix of Chilean folk music, latin jazz and neo-soul grooves to get you on the dance floor. Drawing on his knowledge of the Chilean folk tradition, electric bassist and singer Miguel Herrera will be laying down some deep Latin grooves with drummer Carl Woodward with whom he has formed a fruitful and expanding partnership. On keys for the event is club director Bill Martin, who has contributed some modern jazz arrangements of traditional Chilean folk tunes, ensuring that the sounds of this ensemble sound fresh to those with a modern ear.
Errick’s Venue is a licensed venue with plenty of food and refreshment options. Patrons under the age of 25 will be asked for identification if they wish to purchase alcoholic beverages.
