DJ Jazzington (JP McGlynn) spins the tunes for us this week and we have fans to keep you cool between dances so come get your jazz on!Happy birthday to early jazz singer and dancer Ivie Anderson, born July 10, 1905. She started out at the Cotton Club, toured with Earl Hines before becoming Duke Ellington's vocalist. You can hear her on hits like It Don't Mean A Thing (If You Ain't Got That Swing), Stormy Weather, Chocolate Shake, or Jumpin' On Sugar Hill, and see her in the Marx Brothers 1937 movie A day At The Races.
ADMISSION
• FREE for all current Swing 1, Swing 2 and Queer Swing students.
• $5 for all other RCP and UBC Swing Club students.
• $10 at the door ($5 if you're coming from Showboat).
• Free admission if you've never danced before - bring your friends and we'll gladly show you the basics!
• No one turned away for lack of funds. Volunteers always dance for free, sign up for a shift at the door!
A portion of our revenue goes to payyourrent.ca, a multi-nation Indigenous-led project to receive payment from settlers. Our classes and events take place on the stolen land of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations.
Please be considerate of others’ decision to mask or not, and be prepared to put on a mask as a courtesy to your dance partner if they request it. Stay home if you feel unwell. Thank you for helping us keep our community safe. Oh and don't forget to bring your own water bottle!
