DJ 101 - Rekordbox // 4 Week Course (Mar 2025)

This course is best for beginner DJs! This class series is 12 hours total, spread over 4 classes. Currently this course is $200 - 400 sliding scale. • Learn to DJ on professional industry standard equipment, particularly Pioneer CDJs and mixers
• Take a deep dive into playlist curation, track analysis and file organization using Rekordbox, making blending and improvising in a live scenario fun, creative and easy
• Master the art of transitioning through an in-depth and hands-on understanding of effects, phrasing and EQing

• A laptop with enough space to install Rekordbox! Important note! We won't be using the newest version so hold off on installing until you get to class! (Don't worry, the software is free!)

• A FAT32 formatted USB stick / flash drive! No worries if you don't have one (or if you don't know what any of that means). We can provide you with one for $10 on the first day of school if you don't have one already.
• Bonus! (not necessary but appreciated) 5-10 songs you would like to DJ downloaded on your computer as MP3, AIFF or WAV files

Dailen Williams is a lot of things: a self-taught musician, a DJ, a visual artist, an educator, and an organizer. In her Queer dance-pop project she employs cheap old keyboards, guitar pedals and literal toys to create work characterized by buzzy basslines, shimmery drones, and secret polyrhythms.

A self-taught producer, Dailen began DJing and beatmaking in 2011, eventually going on to start various above and underground party-series around Providence with her peers, including the experimental club night Approximate (2016), the inflatable art installation series Ice Floe (2016-2018), the monthly queer dance party Hot Club II (2019-2020), the sober Queer party Que Dulce (2021-2022), and the local producer showcase Focus Group (2022-2023).

As a teacher Dailen prefers more a practical approach, grounding heady concepts in everyday examples and encouraging could-be artists to make beautiful work with what they already have. Dailen has prepared a deep, yet paletable curriculum that feels a bit more like a fun science class than a lecture.

In addition to courses we host "Club:Meets" - fun and lowkey socials where you can make friends and hone your DJing and music-making skills on our equipment for $0 - 30 sliding scale.

If you'd like to meet us before commiting to a whole course come by during a meet-up! We host them every other Monday night. You'll meet the instructors, see what we're about, and maybe even make a few friends!

Info: This class is on how to use Rekordbox, the main software DJs use with Pioneer gear. Don't scoff, though! Your tracks are the backbone of your performance, and without proper file management, cue points, and general intention around your music habits your gigs won't be nearly as fun as they could be! We will cover installing Rekordbox , overviewing the software, and USB etiquette. Royalty free music will be provided to practice with!

Info: Okay, now that you have analyzed tracks let's spin! This class will provide an overview of the deck. You will learn what every single button does, guaranteed! Learn all the parts of the decks, mixer, and CDJ UI! We'll also go ever what types of equipment to buy based on your personal goals.

Info: Here we dig a bit deeper, now mixing and beatmatching according to song structure. Beats, bars, and phrases are key concepts we'll be unearthing. Building good counting habits and how to program your records. You will learn how to use the headphones when mixing and also the very basics of beatmatching.

Info: This class we explore EQ, the crossfader, and manual syncing! Time will be spent on on EQ: Isolation mixing vs EQ mixing. Gain matching is also focused here so you can achieve that "one continuous" track sound. Finally we explore how to use the filter as an alternative means to EQing.
