About this Event
Speaker: Professor Julia Allan
Julia Allan is Professor of Psychology at the University of Stirling. Her research focuses on; how behaviour is controlled (e.g. how performance is maintained when fatigued, how people stick to diets; etc); how health relevant decisions are made (e.g. treatment decisions; food choices, etc); and how environments and systems can be modified to improve health outcomes. She is past Chair of the British Psychological Society’s Division of Health Psychology Scotland and a current member of the European Health Psychology Society’s Executive Committee.
Presentation Title: Why is it so hard to stick to a diet? Health behaviours and cognitive control
Abstract: Sticking to a diet (or an exercise plan, or physio recommendations, or a new year’s resolution) is difficult. Most people struggle to consistently enact healthy but effortful goals over time. This talk will outline the importance of cognitive processes known as the executive functions in the control and maintenance of effortful health behaviours and describe ways in which environments, systems and services can be re-designed to make healthy choices and behaviours cognitively easier and more likely to be enacted.
