About this Event

Diversity in Aquatics Open Water Swim Competition is an equity-centered swim for swimmers of color. This swim is D.I.A’s first open water swim event to promote opportunities for healthy lifestyles, and practice of social justice advocacy including environmental awareness.

The open water swim will be held on the morning of August 13th, 2022 in the San Francisco Bay. Swimmers will be transported by water taxi to the starting point underneath the Golden Gate Bridge and will reboard the water taxi after completing the roughly 2-mile swim to Alcatraz Island. The water taxi will drop swimmers off at the Dolphin Swim Club for a post-swim meal.

Swimmers will receive a registration packet, including registration items, during the check-in on Friday, August 12th. During the registration process, swimmers will be given instructions for race day and have the opportunity to ask questions.

We recognize communities of color, specifically, those of the African Diaspora, has lawfully, culturally, and systematically been removed from participating in aquatic programming.

The organizers of the event use an equity lens at each stage of planning, organizing, and executing.

Proposed Program for the Water Safety Event

  • 5:00 am - 5:30am: Participant Arrival & Check-in

  • 6:00 am - 12:00 pm: Open Water Swim
  • 8:00 am - 12:00 pm: Dolphin Swim Club Post Meal Swim

The goal of the event is to provide a positive environment for all to build a relationship with the water and its benefits through mindfulness, water, and community.
